Title: Reinventing my Career as I Go

Guest speaker: Dr Eugénie Hunsicker

Abstract: When I started on my academic career as a graduate student, I imagined that a career in mathematics meant steady progress through the ranks and prestige hierarchy. My career wasn’t like that. Instead, I ended up making a major career transition at several points, with the last leading me out of academia and into an industry role. As a result, at many points, I struggled to see my career as successful. But as I have gotten older and understood myself, the way I work, my goals and motivations better, I know it has been. I am now in a fantastic job I absolutely love, and I have no regrets. But boy do I have advice now, which the audience will get. I hope also with some interesting stories and a view into many interesting mathematical questions.

Speaker bio: Dr Eugénie Lee Hunsicker is an American mathematician who works at Loughborough University as a senior lecturer in pure mathematics and as director of equality and diversity for the school of science. Her research in pure mathematics has concerned topics “at the intersection of analysis, geometry and topology”; she has also worked on more applied topics in data science and image classification.
