Teachers’ Twilight event: Does the gender gap in tech start at school?

11 October 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

There seems to be a well documented and growing gender gap in technology and STEM subjects in schools and universities on a background of a recognised STEM skills shortage in the UK. But what is going here?

Are there wider issues around gendered classrooms, gendered school activities, gendered language and are these all contributing to turning girls away from STEM?

Get together with other teachers to discuss and unpick the issues and share good practice in encouraging girls into tech subjects.

What works? What doesn’t? Are the issues the same in primary schools and secondaries? Do we do enough to show girls the breadth, creativity and sheer diversity of roles in modern tech industries? What else can teachers do? How do we engage parents in discussions around gender and tech? Do museums like CCH have a role to play?

Teachers will be able to interact with our Women in Computing:Her Story exhibition before and after the session and to find out about all our services for schools.
