Gresham Lecture: Women in Mathematics: A Celebration of the Bicentenary of Ada Lovelace

29 October 2015 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The afternoon will contribute to appreciations of Ada Lovelace in her 200th year by bringing together papers on women mathematicians working in very different times. The principal speaker will be Professor Ursula Martin of the University of Oxford; her title is ‘The scientific life of Ada Lovelace.’ We are extending the theme of the afternoon to a wider-ranging appreciation of women in mathematics with two supporting papers: Fenny Smith speaking on Hypatia, and Peter Neumann with a paper entitled ‘Hanna Neumann: a mathematician in difficult times.’

Provisional programme:

4.00 Brief Introduction
4.05 Dr. Fenny Smith: ‘Hypatia-Sifting The Myths’
4.45 Dr. Peter Neumann: ‘Hanna Neumann: a mathematician in difficult times’
5.30 Break and reception
6.00 The Gresham/BSHM lecture, by Professor Ursula Martin: ‘The scientific life of Ada Lovelace’
