Ada Lovelace Day at The Pankhurst Centre
9 October 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FreeAda Lovelace and Suffragette Celebrations with a Global Wiki Edit-a-Thon
The Zebra Partnership have joined forces with a variety of organisations to host an amazing event to celebrate women some who have literally been written out of history. As well as celebrating all that is Ada Lovelace, Emmeline Pankhurst, Edith Rigby and their fellow Suffragettes, we also want to improve the coverage of women and diversity on Wikipedia. The Pankhurst Centre have kindly agreed to be our Zebra Hub on 9th October.
Wikipedia is the first to admit that they have some big gender and diversity gaps. In 2011 only 10% of wiki contributors were female and in 2018 only 17% of entries are about women. Let’s help change that!
Join hubs worldwide on the 8th-9th October 2018 for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to women and diversity in science, technology, art, business and more. Huge ‘Thank You’ to Katy Alexander and her team at Digital Science for coordinating this. There is still time for you to set up your own hub and join in this global celebration. Just visit https://www.digital-science.com/wiki-edit-a-thon/set-up-a-hub/ and don’t forget to add your event here if it coincides with the Ada Lovelace celebrations.
Enjoy talks from Zoe Philpott, the lady behind Ada The Show, join #AdasArmy and perhaps even we will have a surprise visit from one of Emmeline’s old friends, Mrs Edith Rigby from Preston. Obviously not Edith herself but the fabulous Claire Moore who plays her in the new theatre show, Woman On Fire. Have your photo taken in Emmeline’s parlour where she hosted the Suffragette meetings. Meet new and old friends, celebrate all the great women and especially those who they tried to write out of history. Let’s update HERStory!
Zebra Hub Hosts:
Carol Ann Whitehead and Google Expert Susan Dolan.
We look forward to welcoming you and if you want to get involved in the Wiki Edit A Thon all you need is a laptop or tablet to upload the information as directed by our onsite ‘Wiki Editor’.
Refreshments will be provided free of charge by The Launch Project.
