Every year, people organise their own events to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day, independently of the main events in London. Here you can see which events were running in your area in 2012. UK

Ashfield: Ashfield District Council International Ada Lovelace Day

A day to raise awareness and give information including puzzles and displays. Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, has strong links with Ada Lovelace and the Byron family. Within the District is Hucknall, where Lord Byron is buried in the parish church of St Mary Magdalene. We are also about two miles away from Newstead Abbey, the family seat of the Byron family. And right in front of our Central Offices at Urban Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield (NG17 8DA) we have a building called Ada Lovelace House, which was established to house a hub for e-learning and developing computing skills.

Leeds: Girl Geek Dinner, 4 Oct 12

Join the Leeds’ Girl Geeks for their thirteenth event, presented by Linda Broughton, Imran AliMonica Tailor and LSx events. On Thursday 4th October, they’ll be building up to Ada Lovelace Day with a talk by its founder, Suw Charman-Anderson.

The evening will be informal, friendly and chilled. Liverpool: DoES Liverpool Ada Lovelace Open Day

Following on from last year’s successful Ada Lovelace celebrations we will again be recognising women in STEM, business and entrepreneurship by having a free day next Tuesday 16th October. The day will be free access for everyone so come down for some co-working or to use our workshop.

London: Ada Lovelace Evening

To celebrate Ada Lovelace Day, we are holding a special Ada Lovelace Evening at the Government Art Collection on 16 October 2012, featuring a portrait of Ada Lovelace by Margaret Carpenter (1793-1872).

Two brief staff talks: ‘The History of Ada’s Portrait’ by curator Philippa Martin and ‘Modern Museum Databases’ by New Media Officer Tony Harris, will be followed by a tour of the Racking Area and Workshop.

The Government Art Collection’s Ada Lovelace Evening will start at 18.30 and will last for 1 hour 30 minutes.

London: Ada Lovelace PubSci Special

On Tuesday 16th October we will have a PubSci special celebrating women in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) hosted by Dr Rebekah Higgitt.

We will celebrate by having a variety of women at different stages of their STEM careers talking about what they do, their experiences as a female in STEM and the female figures that have inspired them. Then the floor will open for the usual exchange of ideas and quaffing of appropriately alcoholic beverages until time is called at the bar.

Join us at the Brixton Ritzy Upstairs Bar from 18:45ish for food, drink and a chat, ready for an 19:30 start. Oh yes, and as always entry is free!

London: Future of Web Apps London

London: Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Wikimedia UK, a charity that supports Wikipedia, is holding a Women in Science themed Wikipedia  Edit-a-Thon at the Royal Society. A Wikipedia editing session will be followed by a panel discussion focusing on the Women in Science theme.

If you know how to edit Wikipedia you can join remotely. Wikimedia and the Royal Society have already created a list of women who either need a new Wikipedia page, or whose page needs additional information adding to it, so you can get cracking with your research ahead of time. And it doesn’t matter where in the world you are – there is already a group of women in India who are joining in online!

Nottingham: Newstead Abbey guided tour, 16 Oct 12

ALD Newstead Abbey Oct 2012

Visit partly-ruined Newstead Abbey, once home to poet Lord Byron, father of Ada Lovelace. Ada did visit the abbey many years after the death of her father, 6th Lord George Gordon Noel Byron, and visitors will have the opportunity of seeing his bedroom in very much the same setting as when she saw it. The many splendid rooms, medieval cloisters and stunning chapel will also be en-route to view, making for a very special experience. Guide Franklin Bishop will relate Ada’s story in detail, with lots of fascinating insights about her life and career.

Nottingham: 3-2-1 Ignition Schools Workshop

The 3-2-1 Ignition ‘pop-up shop’, which is using an empty city centre restaurant as a science education centre for three weeks, is celebrating Ada Lovelace Day with a series of activities for girls only. Full details TBC, but will include a series of group discussions, presentations and debates designed to address the question: What needs to change to encourage and support more girls and young women into STEM?

Calgary: Celebrating Ada Lovelace Day in Calgary!

This year, ThoughtWorks is delighted to host this event for women in technology from across the city where we can share ideas in an informal and creative environment, and of course, mingle.

The event will begin with guest speakers Brandi Chuchman and Victoria MacLean. Brandi Chuchman is the Director of Cybermentor, a program that aims to inspire young girls in science and engineering fields through mentoring. Victoria MacLean, Co-founder of Beaucoo & AcceleratorYYC and President of Startup Calgary, will shed some light on the start-up scene in Calgary. There will also be some interesting lightning talks as well.

Turin: Museo Piemontese dell’Informatica celebrate Ada Lovelace Day

Museo Piemontese dell’Informatica (MuPIn) will celebrate women’s role in technology on 16 October in Turin. Elia Bellussi will begin the evening with a brief presentation of Ada Lovelace’s life and achievements. There will then be a debate about women’s role in science and technology, with questions after. Speakers include Simona Ronchi, Della Rocca, Bice Fubini, Debora Fino, Anita Calcatelli and Cristina Bonin. MuPIn will then launch their programming contest for young women.

Vicenza: Ada Lovelace Day Brunch

ADA Lab (English) is a steampunk infolab with bed & breakfast in Vicenza, near Venice, Italy, which is dedicated to Ada Lovelace in particular and to women and hacking in general. ADA Lab will celebrate Ada Lovelace Day on the following Sunday, 21st October.

After the usual Sunday brunch (accompanied by a DJ-set), there will be a presentation of a book on the history of women involved in electronic music (including Ada herself!), a show with an electronic mini-orchestra revolving around the Fibonacci numbers and a series of live-set and dj-set organized by the Electronic Girls, an electronic label run by women.

Stockholm: Wikipedia Sweden Edit-a-thon

Wikipedia Sweden are having an edit-a-thon, or skrivstuga in Swedish, to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day. Participants are invited to get together at Solidaritetshuset to jointly improve and create new articles about women who are or have been active in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Coffee, tea and sandwiches will be served. Those who aren’t able to attend in person are welcome to join in online.

Participants from around New England are invited to gather at Harvard Law School on Ada Lovelace Day to edit and create Wikipedia entries on women who have made significant contributions to the STEM fields. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; as needed, tutorials will be provided for Wikipedia newcomers. Female editors are particularly encouraged to attend. Can’t make it in person? Ada’s Technical Books, a technical book store specialising in new, used, & rare books on computers, electronics, physics, math, and science,  has commissioned an art project at its future store location – a yarn bombed house. On Ada Lovelace Day, they invite members of the community to come and add to the art project by stitching the name of an inspiring woman in STEM onto the house. London: The IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards Ceremony

New York: Ladies Who Code Conference

Ladies Who Code exists to give women with technical expertise a place to share their wisdom and a community that fits them. For beginners who are excited and passionate, we provide encouragement, code reviews, professional advice, and role models to those who may not have previously seen themselves represented in the field. By celebrating women in tech, from Ada Lovelace to her modern counterparts, and creating a welcoming community, we can play a part in shifting the gender ratio in the field to a more balanced state.

The first Ladies Who Code Conference will be held on October 20th, 2012 in NYC. This one-day, one-track event will feature 6 keynotes including speakers: Molly Holzschlag (molly.com), Tracy Pesin (bit.ly), and Vanessa Hurst (Girl Develop It), along with a handful of smaller presentations. We’re inviting 100+ attendees. Any proceeds we make will go directly back into future Ladies Who Code initiatives.

Ada Lovelace Day is a grassroots movement, so you don’t need our permission to run an Ada Lovelace Day event, just get cracking and do what suits your community.
