ORSSA Ada Lovelace Day 2019 – Women in Superposition
8 October 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeWomen in Superposition
Machine learning has established itself firmly in many industries. However, problems arise when applications become too complex – models either slow down or become intractable. Combining traditional machine learning with simple techniques from quantum mechanics shifts models into a new paradigm where these problems do not necessarily occur. In this talk, I will briefly introduce quantum computing and the idea of quantum machine learning along with some real-world applications. I will also highlight extraordinary work being done in our research group by fellow female scientists, such as quantum teleportation and quantum-biological effects on the brain.

Amira is a researcher in the Quantum Research Group at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a former research scientist at STANLIB Multi-Manager. Her current work focuses on the intersection of quantum mechanics and machine learning theory in order to solve problems that are not possible to compute classically. She holds a bachelor of business science degree in actuarial science and is pursuing her master’s degree in physics.
