Ada Lovelace / Lord Byron ‘Zine Mashup!
12 October 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm
FreeA gifted mathematician, Ada Lovelace is considered to have written instructions for the first computer program in the mid-1800s. She has been described as “that Enchantress of Numbers who has thrown her magical spell around the most abstract of Sciences and has grasped it with a force which few masculine intellects could have exerted over it.” Oh, swoon. But, wait, what does this have to do with Book Suey? Well, her father was Lord Byron, and we stock his poetry! So, in the spirit of Ada, we will be celebrating International Ada Lovelace Day, by hosting a Ada/Byron Mashup ‘Zine Workshop!
Working with obsolete computer textbooks, discarded 19th century poetry anthologies, and a variety of aesthetically pleasing and relevant ephemera, folks can paste & slice & sew handbound pamphlets to their hearts desire! For those seeking total immersion, there will be stacks of old-stock IBM punch cards available for you to fashion into your own personal Classical/Romantic/Victorian or even Elizabethan calling cards! As if that isn’t enough to set the mood, we’ll also be (delicately) shouting out random factoids and quizzes and quotes about the lovely Ada, while sipping English Breakfast tea and eating something akin to crumpets (while supplies last). Do join us for a jolly good, totally free, time!
