Pioneering women in mathematics

9 October 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

“A woman can win the victory, though she may not wear the wreath”

From Hypatia, murdered by a Christian mob in 415CE, to Ada Lovelace ‘the enchantress of numbers’ and Florence Nightingale ‘the passionate statistician’, there have been women who have loved mathematics and, in defiance of the social and intellectual mores of the day, have shown themselves to be extremely good at it. In her talk, Dr June Barrow-Green will introduce a number of these women, describe some of the difficulties they encountered and give an indication of what they managed to achieve.
