Didcot: #Be2CampOxon
Be2camp is for people interested in how the latest web and mobile applications and web design techniques (blogs, Twitter, wikis) can help build a better, more sustainable built environment – planning, design, construction, occupation and management of buildings, services and landscape.
The theme is “Letting Go of Print”: With such amazing technology at our disposal why are we so wedded to the idea of paper? We use virtual folders to save files, our drawing packages include paper space and most tender packages end up as a huge envelope on someone’s desk. Why?
Topics we will look at include:
- How could we make use of the benefits of technology to let go of thinking of our work in 2D?
- Is technology always the best option – are there times paper does win?
- How can we manage digital information to help us and our clients work more effectively?
Ada Lovelace Day has been deliberately chosen as the date for our event and we will close with a Pecha Kucha session for Finding Ada inspired talks. More information….

Each artist has the problem of deciding where the balance lies, between visual experience and ideas, and I will try to explain my choice’.
Artist Layla Curtis will give a talk about her ongoing online artwork Antipodes. This constantly updating website collects live images from webcams located on exact opposite sides of the planet and allows viewers to simultaneously view footage from places as far away from each other as it is possible to be. Online: Official Launch of Robot Girl Lottie and Busy Lizzie the Robot
Robot Girl Lottie™ and the Busy Lizzie Robot let younger children picture themselves in the role of builder and inventor.
The aim is to introduce the theme of robots in a positive way – and via the unexpected medium of a doll – making specific use of the words “research” and “build”, while encouraging encourage girls to study STEM.
Busy Lizzie the Robot has interactive plug-in elements so that the arms and headpieces are interchangeable. Cogs stickers add further opportunity to customise. The Busy Lizzie shoes are also interchangeable with those of the Robot Girl doll; they are, naturally, recycled. An actual science fair project by 8-year-old Allie Weber from Sioux Falls, SD, provided the inspiration for the set.
The packaging includes practical suggestions for kids to get “hands-on” with robots. This features a mini-biography of Erin Kennedy, Canadian robotics role-model, and original “Robot Grrl,” and Kathy Ceceri, US award-winning author of ‘Robotics’.

Ada Lovelace: First Computer Programmer
In 1842, Ada Lovelace published what we now recognise as the first computer program. It was written to calculate Bernoulli Numbers on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, a mechanical computing device that was never built.
But Lovelace did not only understand how Babbage’s machine could carry out complex computations, she also imagined that, given the right inputs it could make music or graphics. Lovelace was way ahead of her time, to the point where even Babbage couldn’t see the genius of her ideas.
So who was Ada Lovelace? How did she end up making one of the most impressive theoretical leaps of the last two hundred years? And why is she such an important figure for women in computing today?Suw Charman-Anderson talks about Lovelace and her achievements, and why she has become the figurehead of a yearly celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and maths, Ada Lovelace Day.
