Evening Exchange: Science of Harmony

23 October 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Supposing, for instance, that the fundamental relations of pitched sounds in the science of harmony and of musical composition were susceptible of such expression and adaptations, the engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent.’

– Ada Lovelace, ‘Notes upon L. F. Menabrea’s Sketch of the Analytical Engine Invented by Charles Babbage’>

As she once imagined they would be, Ada Lovelace’s numerical algorithms have now been transformed into music.

In the second of our Evening Exchange’s celebrating the Victorian computer pioneer, composer Emily Howard and mathematician Lasse Rempe will discuss how music and mathematics intertwine.

There will be a recital of Emily’s ‘Ada Sketches’ and a chance to produce your own mathematical music.
