Abstract: Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, was born in 1815 and yet is widely recognised to be the world’s first computer programmer. Who was Ada Lovelace? How did a Victorian noblewoman get interested in computers? What computer was she programming and would we recognise this as programming? Lastly, we’ll look at how she’s become the poster girl for women in computing.

Carron is an honorary senior research fellow at the University of Glasgow, where she’s involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives. Mainly, these days, Carron is gardening, making art and music, having retired from being a professor of computing.
