Please contactelaine@computinghistory.org.uk to book or for further details  \nInformation\nAda Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths (STEM). It’s about sharing inspirational stories to help create new role models for girls and women in these male-dominated fields. \nZoe Philpott is an interactive storyteller with fifteen years of digital experience and over twenty years of collaborating\, writing\, producing and directing. She founded “Moral Support” multimedia theatre company to “cross boundaries in storytelling” collaborating with artists\, astrophysicists and computer scientists. \nZoe says: “For me\, whatever I bring\, it is all about inspiring these young people to be excited by – and become committed to – STEM within their lives and education. Ada Lovelace is an extremely inspiring female role model. She invented the computer program in 1843 and then got written out of history…What if children grew up not knowing who Newton\, Einstein or Shakespeare were? …Let’s put the British inventor\, the woman who changed the way we live today back into history: the inventor of the very first computer program\, Ada Lovelace!” \nCarron Shankland is a Professor of Computing Science at the University of Stirling. She is Chair of BCS Women in Computing Research Group and a member of the University of Stirling Centre for Gender and Feminist Studies. \nProf Shankland is passionate about the promotion of careers in science for women.

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Woman of the Year in NOLATech Award Ceremony and Celebration
DESCRIPTION:First programmer\, first debugger\, Renaissance woman and the “Enchantress of Numbers” – Ada Lovelace has been known by many names and honored for many achievements. \nThis year\, as we near the two-hundredth anniversary of her birth\, we’d like to celebrate her practice of “poetical science”. \nLong known as one of the true innovators behind the birth of the programmable computer\, Ada Lovelace was more than a brilliant thinker or mathematician. Instead\, she was a visionary\, a woman who grasped the potential of one of the earliest computers – Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine – and predicted the impacts that it would have on everyday life over one hundred years in the future. \nIt’s this brand of insight that not only predicts innovation\, but drives it. \nWe’d like to take this opportunity to celebrate the work of a New Orleans woman who demonstrates the same deep technological foresight and ambition that exemplified all of Lovelace’s endeavors. \nIf you know someone who deserves this recognition\, we encourage you to nominate them to receive this year’s Ada Lovelace Prize. Nominees could be technological founders and creators\, or they could work behind the scenes\, spurring the New Orleans tech environment on to new heights. Nominations will be accepted until September 30th. \nA winner will be decided by specially selected judges\, and awarded her prize on October 6th at the inaugural Woman of the Year in NOLATech Award Ceremony and Celebration \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace: Victorian Computing Visionary
DESCRIPTION:In 2009\, Suw Charman-Anderson founded of Ada Lovelace Day\, an international celebration of the achievements of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths. With grassroots events held around the world and thousands of people writing and talking about the women who have inspired them\, the day seeks to raise women’s profiles and highlight unsung heroines. \nSuw will talk about why there’s a need for such a day\, and also about Ada Lovelace herself. Lauded as the first ever computer programmer\, Ada was a gifted mathematician\, yet today she faces challenges from many voices as to the veracity of her contributions to computer science. So who was Ada? And what do we know about her work on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine? \nSuw is a social technologist and\, as one of the UK’s social media pioneers\, has worked with clients worldwide. A freelance journalist\, she has written about social media and technology for The Guardian\, CIO Magazine and others. \nLearn more about Ada Lovelace Day\, 13 October 2015\, at www.findingada.com or follow the team on Twitter at @findingada. Suw’s blog is at www.chocolateandvodka.com and you can follow her on Twitter as @suw. \n  \nThis is a free event\, although donations to help fund Birmingham Skeptics in the Pub events are appreciated. We suggest £2\, or whatever you can afford. Seats are limited and offered on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:ThoughtWorks SF celebrates Ada Lovelace 200th Birthday!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our Ada Lovelace 200th Birthday Celebration @ our new ThoughtWorks office in San Francisco!! \nWho was Ada Lovelace? \nAugusta Ada King\, Countess of Lovelace was an English mathematician and writer\, chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage’s early mechanical general-purpose computer\, the Analytical Engine. Her notes on the engine include what is recognized as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. Because of this\, she is often regarded as the “first computer programmer”. Her contributions to the Analytical Engine remained a vision\, but later came to fruition by inspiring Alan Turing’s work on the first modern computer in the 1940s. Ada now remains as a powerful symbol for women working in science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics. \nWe plan on having fun event with a safe and encouraging crowd. Last year\, we had a well attended event and with our new space we’re excited to host an even bigger crowd! (Check out last year’s event here: TWSFLovesAda2014) \n\nHere’s a rough agenda of the night … \n5:30 PM Meet and Greet\n7:00 PM Lightning Talks\n8:00 PM Network & Mingle \nAnyone can attend\, not just women! Snacks and drinks will be provided. \nIf you are interested in speaking at our event please sign up here:AdaLovelaceCallForSpeakers \nEvent Hashtags #ALD15 #TWLovesAda #ThoughtWorksSF
