SUMMARY:Artist's Talk with Harriet Davey
DESCRIPTION:We cordially invite you to a discussion on October 13 at 6:00 p.m. with Harriet Davey (multimedia artist\, GBR/DEU)! \nThe events are taking place on the occasion of Ada Lovelace Day 2025 as part of OUT OF CONTROL. \nIn English. \nThrough her exploration of gender-nonconforming virtual avatars\, Harriet Davey restores and reclaims bodies that have been suppressed by a male-dominated gaming industry. Obsessed with the question of what it means to be fluid and human in a digital world\, she examines and questions the ugly and the beautiful\, the maximum and the minimum\, online and offline life. Her work includes pre-rendered short films and animations\, still images\, and most recently\, real-time digital performances using motion capture and interactive games in which the audience can participate. \nLimited number of participants. To register\, email: office@esc.mur.at. \nesc medien kunst labor \nThe central task of esc is the production of art. In this context the main focus is on the precise observation and seismographic recording of artistic processes that examine and deal with socio-political developments (information- and biotechnologies\, socio-economic systems) and new technologies (hardware and software). \nThe artistic activities of the esc media art laboratory derive from the notion that art is understood as subsystem of social and societal reality; the media-specific approach is based on the designation of this reality through “new” culture technologies “new media”.

SUMMARY:Skills for the future: A Conversation with Suw Charman-Anderson\, Digital Pioneer & Creator of Ada Lovelace Day.
DESCRIPTION:On Ada Lovelace Day\, Suw will meet with Kate Whyles\, Digital Innovation and Development Coach\, and Sue Stack\, Head of Student Experience at the Highfields campus of Nottingham College. This session is an informal discussion entitled “Skills for the Future: A Conversation with Suw Charman-Anderson\, Digital Pioneer & Creator of Ada Lovelace Day.”  \nThis conversation will highlight the importance of continuous learning in STEM subjects and the ongoing need to dismantle gender barriers when attracting and supporting a balanced group of students in traditionally male-dominated courses.  \nIt will focus on the significance of skill development and the ability to adapt to career changes. The speakers will address the limitations of AI\, highlighting the essential role that human perspectives play alongside the necessary qualifications for women in STEM who wish to pursue their desired careers.   \nThe session will conclude with a discussion on how a comprehensive approach to career growth\, allyship\, and embedding a welcoming and inclusive environment in the education sector can encourage more women to pursue STEM courses at FE level.  \n

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace: Girl geek role model (lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Carron Shankland will give a lecture about Ada Lovelace. The lecture is intended primarily for members of the School of Computing Science and students. The talk is in room 423\, Sir Alwyn Williams Building. \nAbstract: Augusta Ada King\, Countess of Lovelace\, was born in 1815 and yet is widely recognised to be the world’s first computer programmer. Who was Ada Lovelace? How did a Victorian noblewoman get interested in computers? What computer was she programming and would we recognise this as programming? Lastly\, we’ll look at how she’s become the poster girl for women in computing. \nBio: Carron was one of the first holders of a Suffrage Science award in Computing\, and Scottish Woman of the Year for services to science and technology in 2017. Carron is an honorary senior research fellow at the University of Glasgow\, where she’s involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives. Mainly\, these days\, Carron is gardening\, making art and music\, having retired from being a professor of computing.

SUMMARY:Dramaturgy and direction in Blender with Harriet Davey
DESCRIPTION:We cordially invite you to a workshop on October 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with Harriet Davey (multimedia artist\, GBR/DEU)! \nThe events are taking place on the occasion of Ada Lovelace Day 2025 as part of OUT OF CONTROL. \nIn English. \nHow to improve environments and lighting in 3D (Blender) \nParticipants should already be familiar with Blender (or other 3D software). If you know how to navigate the 3D viewport and perform basic transformations on meshes\, you’re ready to go. This workshop will cover techniques for improving scenes through lighting\, camera\, and render settings\, as well as creating a simple landscape scene. We will use some free add-ons\, and additional 3D mesh files will be provided if needed.
