SUMMARY:[ONLINE] ETHOS LAB: Materializing Data with Macramé
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Ada Lovelace Day 2020 ETHOS Lab at the IT University of Copenhagen will be hosting a workshop on Macrame and Data Feminism with Vasiliki Tsaknaki\, Assistant Professor in Digital Design\, ITU. \nThe history of computation is filled with contributions made by women and their ingenuity\, crafts\, and art. But so often the kinds of contributions that are feminized are also marginalized. The close relationship between computation and weaving\, as seen for example in the jacquard loom\, or with knots and tying has often been overlooked when recounting the innovation of computational artifice. More recently\, work in “data feminism” has drawn attention to the ways that we feminize and marginalize particular ways of working with and visualizing data. Particular aesthetics of objective totalizing visions are privileged over partial and embodied ones. \n In her talk\, Vasiliki Tsaknaki will tell us about her own work collaborating on digital technologies with craft artists and working with soft and textile forms of programming and designing computation.  \nThe talk will be an inspirational point of departure and an introduction to some of the ways that knots\, tying\, and textile arts like macrame\, have (might) contributed to computational aesthetics and thought.  \nIn the workshop\, through exploring possible paths to visualizing gender data with macrame knots\, we will reflect on how data is produced\, designed and communicated. We will also be working hands on with macrame to explore how tying and knots might be a way of transmuting and interpreting data on gender representation at our own institutions. Attempting to materialize data in macrame\, we will reflect on what happens when we put data into our hands to think and work with through string\, beads\, and tying knots.

SUMMARY:Cream Tea with Inspirational Women
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) was a mathematician and writer. She is best known for her work on Charles Babbage’s “Analytical Engine”\, recognising that it had applications beyond pure calculation and seeing the full potential of a “computing machine”. She is regarded as being the first computer programmer and her achievements are recognised every year with a celebration of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths (STEM) on International Ada Lovelace Day. \nAda Lovelace also has a connection to Porlock\, having lived at Ashley Combe\, Porlock Weir\, now sadly gone. Porlock celebrates the day\, and the local connection\, by inviting women from all walks of life to share their inspiring stories and achievements. This year’s speakers are Serrie Chapman\, Principal Safety Engineer at Fusion Processing\, Meryl Harrison\, former Chief Inspector at the Zimbabwe National Society for the Protection of Animals\, Dr Annela Seddon\, Associate Professor in Physics at Bristol University and Jacqueline Shave\, leader of Britten Sinfonia. \nSerrie Chapman is working in cutting edge technology on level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles (no driver required) on safety and has previously worked in systems engineering on the rail electrification project and in semiconductor (chip) testing for automotive.  She came into engineering despite being talked out of it at an early age and has been supporting other women into the industry through networking groups such as Girl geek Dinners and Women’s Tech hub. \nDuring her time as Chief Inspector at the Zimbabwe National Society for the Protection of Animals (ZNSPCA) Meryl Harrison was instrumental in carrying out the rescues of thousands of animals from farms from which owners have been forcibly evicted during the land redistribution programme in Zimbabwe. \nDr Annela Seddon is an Associate Professor of Soft Matter Physics at the University of Bristol\, and the Director of the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials. She has been fascinated by what things are made of since she was a child and now uses powerful x-ray sources both in her lab and across the world to study how the shape and arrangement of materials on the molecular scale influences their function. \nJacqueline Shave received her formal training at the Royal Academy of Music but drew her particular performance inspiration and love of chamber music from her time at the Britten-Pears School in Snape. She is in demand as a guest leader with many of the UKs leading orchestras and ensembles. \n“Cream Tea with Inspirational Women” takes place in Porlock Village Hall\, starting at 2.30pm. DESCRIPTION:Visit Totnes Museum in south Devon from Monday 11th to Friday 29th October to find out more about Ada Lovelace and why she is a role model for girls and women who want to pursue careers in STEM subjects. \nCoinciding with the creation of a new statue of Ada Lovelace by sculptors Etienne and Mary Millner\, to be erected in London this autumn\, the free display will include a maquette of the sculpture\, an original drawing of Ada\, and details about her remarkable achievements\, plus information on career possibilities for girls in science\, technology\, engineering and maths. Puzzle sheets for children will ask them to crack a code based on computer punch cards\, which of course were an important part of Charles Babbage’s plans for an ‘Analytical Engine’ on which Ada worked\, and were effectively the first ‘computer program’. Ada also went on to see the possibilities of the machine creating things other than numbers\, such as music and poetry. \nTotnes and Devon have strong links to Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace. Babbage came from a Totnes family and went to school there for a while\, and Lovelace spent a good deal of time with her family at their house Ashley Combe in north Devon. Totnes Museum is planning to expand its collections to emphasise the history of STEM subjects. \nEntry to the museum is free and the museum relies on donations. \nOpening hours Mon-Sat 10am-4pm (last admission 3.30pm)

DESCRIPTION:University brings computer science to life to encourage girls into tech careers  \nGirls from city schools are set to perform a virtual reality patient healthcheck\, take part in a ‘Wall Street’ trade-off and create digital art over a day of activities to promote women in tech at University College Birmingham. \nTwenty pupils from Greenwood Academy and Cockshut Hill School are due take part in a series of workshops around computer science and digital careers as part of Ada Lovelace Day on October 12. \nAda is considered the first computer programmer\, writing about a computer\, the Analytical Engine. While it was never built\, she realised the computer could follow simple instructions\, a program\, to perform a complex calculation. \nHeld within the University’s range of digital facilities\, students will also get to try their hand at web design as part of a computer science session. \nThe cutting-edge facilities spread across four campuses as part of a £130 million investment – include a digital creative studio\, healthcare simulation suite\, computer science labs\, financial trading suite and prosthetics suite. \nRachel Gowers\, Executive Dean Business\, Tourism and Creative Industries\, said: “Britain’s technology industry is booming\, with tech firms attracting more than £6bn of venture capital funding in 2018. \n“However\, the percentage of women working in tech has barely changed in 10 years and today\, women make up just 17% of IT specialists in the UK. \n“We are at the beginning of a Fourth Industrial Revolution and rather than being daunted by this prospect\, this is an opportunity for women to think about how technology can help them tap into a whole range of career paths. \n“Through our women in tech day and the inspiration of Ada Lovelace\, we want to show young girls that tech is an exciting\, valuable sector to study and work in. The more women that want to work in tech\, the better our tech will be.” \nThe workshops will be led by the University’s own female ambassadors for women in tech\, including award-winning prosthetics artist and lecturer Alexandra Wathey\, who has worked on Doctor Who and Game of Thrones. \nAlongside fellow lecturer Stacey Hall\, she will be showing the students how to create a digital sculpture using high-tech ZBrush design software. \nLecturer Katie Broughton will be hosting the simulation in healthcare workshop\, lecturer Kanwal Rauf will be sharing her skills in computer programming\, while lecturer Nicola Sandford will be leading the ‘Working Wall Street’ workshop. \nTsai Lovett\, Deputy Dean for Teaching\, Learning and Digital at University College Birmingham\, said: “Studying a technological subject at university involves creativity\, communication and problem-solving skills. Tech is involved in every career now and we wanted to showcase how exciting it can be. \n“And you don’t have to dedicate yourself to one thing. You can start with something that looks interesting and progress into another if anything tech gives you more flexibility than most careers to do that. \nDevelopments in genetics\, artificial intelligence\, robotics\, biotechnology are all building and amplifying one another\, If you start learning one set of skills\, you might just find they can easily translate into another.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation about the development of “Ada”\, a music-theater work-in-progress about Ada Lovelace\, with Composer Kim Sherman\, Librettist Margaret Vandenburg\, Music Director Kimberly Grigsby\, Director Lisa Rothe. and Naomi Leonard\, the Edwin S. Wilsey Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University.  The sharing will also feature video which dives into the writing process and relationship between passion and technology/science\, along with a panel discussion on the team’s goals for their residency at Bethany Arts Center. \nAs we all know\, Ada Lovelace is one of the most spectacular characters in computer history and the daughter of the poet Lord Byron and Anne Isabella Milbanke\, the Baroness of Wentworth. Within the first year after Ada’s birth\, Anna asks for a separation from Byron and is awarded sole custody. Fearing her daughter might follow in her father’s notorious footsteps\, Anna rears Ada to be a mathematician and scientist. Like Byron\, Ada embarks on a Romantic quest very much at odds with the prevailing Victorian ethic of restraint. Though her medium was mathematics\, she rejects the notion that virtue lies in conformity\, believing instead in a higher ethic of knowledge and ambition. Ada meets the inventor Charles Babbage and becomes smitten with his new invention\, The Difference Engine. Ada Byron\, the “Enchantress of Numbers\,” melds her father’s Romantic visions with her mother’s mathematical genius to develop the prototype of modern computer language. \n“Ada” provides a nexus of old and new\, traditional Romantic themes and contemporary digital vocabularies. The music is a hybrid of Romantic lyricism and modern dissonance. The libretto weaves tapestries of numbers and Byronic flights of fancy into a story that is simultaneously timeless and timely\, the journey of a woman who defies Victorian constraints to usher the industrial age into the digital age. Ada is a brilliant imaginative pre-conceiver\, a woman very much ahead of her time who valiantly wrestles with the constraints imposed upon her. \n

SUMMARY:[ONLINE] Optimal decision making: a tribute to female ingenuity
DESCRIPTION:ACEMS is proud to host this virtual public lecture celebrating Ada Lovelace Day and the significant contribution of women in STEM.\nOptimisation is the branch of mathematics that supports optimal decision-making. Mathematics is needed when there are too many choices available\, too many rules to satisfy\, and too many goals to be achieved – to find the perfect solution without mathematical help. \nIn this lecture\, Kate Smith-Miles and Alison Harcourt will discuss how everyday decisions – made by governments and corporations\, and everyday people when using apps like Google Maps – are powered by optimisation techniques. They will take a whirlwind tour through some of the breakthrough ideas that have enabled optimisation techniques to help us make decisions faster\, better\, and cheaper. \nSome of these breakthrough ideas have been due to female ingenuity\, and on this Ada Lovelace Day\, we will pay tribute to the game-changing contributions of two more remarkable women – Ailsa Land and Alison Harcourt (née Doig). \nTheir idea changed the course of optimisation technique development and paved the way for optimisation to have the impact we see in the world today. We will hear Alison tell the tale of their idea and what happened next. \nFinally\, we will look at the future challenges of optimisation\, and the opportunities for new ideas to continue to create an impact in the world. \nAbout the speakers\nKate Smith-Miles is a Professor of Applied Mathematics\, Chief Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS)\, and an Australian Laureate Fellow at The University of Melbourne. She graduated from The University of Melbourne with a BSc(Hons) in mathematics\, and a PhD in electrical engineering\, before commencing her academic career in 1996 at Monash University. Returning to The University of Melbourne in 2017\, she is currently Associate Dean (Enterprise and Innovation) for the Faculty of Science\, and Director of the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Optimisation Technologies\, Integrated Methodologies\, and Applications (OPTIMA). Passionate about interdisciplinary applications of mathematics\, her award-winning research in optimisation\, machine learning\, and mathematical modelling has found application in many fields as diverse as manufacturing design\, epidemiology\, computer vision\, finance\, and stem cell modelling. \nAlison Harcourt AO (nee Doig) completed a BA(Hons)(1950)\, BSc(1952)\, and MA(1958) at the University of Melbourne\, majoring in mathematics and statistics. Alison is a pioneer in the field of optimisation\, having co-authored the seminal paper: A. H. Land and A. G. Doig\, An Automatic Method of Solving Discrete Programming Problems\, Econometrica\, vol. 28\, no. 3\, 1960. This ground-breaking paper is well-known to researchers in optimisation since it proposed a method for solving integer programming problems which later became known as the “branch-and-bound” method. It underpins modern day optimisation software packages that provide efficient solutions to challenging combinatorial optimisation problems. Applications include logistics\, transportation\, scheduling\, telecommunications\, and radiotherapy treatment planning. \nAlison’s statistical analyses have had profound impacts influencing government policy. Examples include the first attempts to estimate poverty in Australia (informing the 1972 Royal Commission of Inquiry into Poverty\, work headed by Professor Ronald Henderson) and\, in conjunction with Dr Malcolm Clark\, a statistical analysis of bias that led to an amendment of the Commonwealth Electoral Act in 1984. This amendment introduced a ‘double randomisation’ method for allocating positions of political parties on ballot papers\, which is still used today. \nAlison was foundation secretary of the Victorian branch of the Statistical Society of Australia (1963-1967)\, and has co-authored two books and written numerous journal articles. \nToday\, she continues to teach as a sessional tutor in undergraduate statistics subjects at the University. \nIn 2018\, in recognition of her significant achievements and contributions to society\, the University of Melbourne awarded its highest honour\, the degree of Doctor of Science(honoris causa) to Alison. She was also named the 2019 Victorian Senior Australian of the Year.

DESCRIPTION:A piece of cake or a hard nut to crack? How well can computational models understand (idiomatic) languages?\nAbstract:  \nRecent advances in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing have resulted in considerable gains for languagetechnology applications\, from machine translation to conversational agents. However\, one challenge that still defies current models is handling Multiword Expressions (MWEs)\, like idioms (e.g. “rock the boat”  meaning to cause problems or disturb a situation)\, compounds nouns (e.g. “monkey business” meaning dishonest behaviour)\, and light verb constructions (e.g.“take off” as depart)\,  as they often display idiomaticity\, and their accurate processing often requires knowledge that goes beyond the individual words and their literal combinations. However\, as MWEs are found in all languages and domains\, representing a large part of the vocabulary of speakers\, their inaccurate processing may lead to loss of information (e.g. interpreting “kick the bucket” literally as “strike a container with the foot” when it is used with the idiomatic meaning of “die”). In this talk I will discuss some of the challenges for the computational treatment of MWEs\, focusing on techniques for identifying their degree of idiomaticity. \nSpeaker Bio: \nAline Villavicencio is the Chair in Natural Language Processing at the Department of Computer Science\, University of Sheffield (UK) and also affiliated to the Institute of Informatics\, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). She received her PhD from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2001\, and held postdoc positions at the University of Cambridge and University of Essex (UK). She was a Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA\, 2011-2012 and 2014-2015)\, at the École Normale Supé­rieure (France\, 2014)\, an Erasmus-Mundus Visting Scholar at Saarland University (Germany in 2012/2013) and at the University of Bath (UK\, 2006-2009). She held a Research Fellowship from the  Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (Brazil\, 2009-2017). She is a member of the editorial board of Computational Linguistics\, TACL and of JNLE\, is a PC Co-Chair of ACL-2022\, was PC Co-Chair of CoNLL-2019\, Senior Area Chair for ACL-2020 and ACL-2019 among others and General co-chair for the 2018 International Conference on Computational Processing of Portuguese. She is also a member of the NAACL board\, SIGLEX board and of the program committees of various *ACL and AI conferences\, and has co-chaired  several *ACL workshops on Cognitive Aspects of Computational Language Acquisition and on Multiword Expressions. Her research interests include lexical semantics\, multilinguality\, multiword expressions and cognitively motivated NLP\, and has co-edited special issues and books dedicated to these topics.
