SUMMARY:9th Ada Lovelace Day Festival
DESCRIPTION:At the Ada Lovelace Festival 2023\, we went beyond the visible to explore how we’re collectively reimagining tomorrow’s tech. What skills will we need to shape the future? How can all voices join the discourse and mold the future of tech? \n‍Technology has become our constant companion in both our personal and professional lives. Yet\, despite the omnipresence we’re still disconnected from the true impact of our technology. We see the glitz\, are blinded by the flash\, and keep fumbling forward to the next big innovation. But behind the technological facade stand inspiring ideas and visionary minds working tirelessly to reshape our world and relationship with technology.

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace - mother of the Computer Program(me)
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace is a fascinating character\, a visionary scientist trying to make a name for herself in patriarchal Victorian Britain\, but add into the mix the toxic relationship between her infamous father\, Lord Byron\, and her staid\, and yet equally impressive mother\, Lady Byron\, plus the eccentric personality of Mr. Charles Babbage and his ever growing and never to be finished Engines\, and you have all the ingredients you need for a great story and a very long sentence. \nAda’s story offers up rabbit holes galore – Babbage’s relentless campaign against London organ grinders\, the whereabouts of his brain (in two separate locations)\, unemployed hairdressers in post-revolutionary France working as human computers\, a roller-blading inventor with the name of a wizard who created some of most ingenious automata of his time\, including the Silver Swan at The Bowes Museum\, as well as Luddites and laudanum. \nAngela Hill is an honors graduate in History and Social Anthropology from Stirling University and lives and works in Madrid. She will be reading from her new book; Ada Lovelace\, and discussing how the DELTA readers support learning English & more. \nDrinks and snacks will be served.

SUMMARY:ENUSEC presents: Capture the Flag Competition
DESCRIPTION:Develop and challenge your cyber skills in ENUSEC’s (Edinburgh Napier Security Society) Capture the Flag cybersecurity competition\, with challenges based on cryptography\, open-source intelligence and more! \nIf you’re at high school (S3-6)\, college\,or university enter on your own or grab up to three of your friends to form a team and put your problem-solving abilities to the test.\nThe competition will run throughout the Ada Scotland Festival 2-13 October. \nPrizes \nT-shirts\, pens\, and stickers for winning teams. \nRegistration \nRegister opens Monday 2nd October: https://ctf.enusec.org/ \nFor more info contact team@enusec.org. \nAbout ENUSEC: \nAt Edinburgh Napier University Security Society (ENUSEC)\, we host weekly meetups for our members\, during which we host practical sessions on platforms such as TryHackMe or Hack The Box\, or assist with any deadlines our members may have\, or host both professional and student speakers. With numerous alumni of ENUSEC working for a range of tech companies\, we wish to share our network with members to help them further their career portfolio in turn helping to acquire jobs or placements within industry. We have an open discord – discord.enusec.org and a website enusec.org \nOur aim is to make cyber security as accessible as possible and encourage anyone and everyone to get involved in the cyber security scene. This year we are especially pushing to break down the stigma and encourage more women and gender diverse people to take interest. Our main target are those in schools and colleges as that is where the stigma starts. \nWe are also hosting CTF (a cyber security practical competition using essential real-life skills) challenges for those studying computing as a subject (leaning towards higher/advanced higher) and college classes. This will be open for the whole Ada Scotland Festival and the winners will be announced the following week. \nOur flagship event Le Tour Du Hack also offers a great opportunity to network with industry sponsors and speakers while they present on a range of subjects from cyber-security areas (eg. How to use Applications\, Digital Forensics). The event also hosts a CTF competition where people (mostly students) come from across the country come to compete\, offering a chance to sharpen skills while interacting with others who have similar interests.

SUMMARY:[ONLINE] How teaching tech innovation can help shape the future for young Scots
DESCRIPTION:Hear from Apps for Good about how their free computing courses will inspire Scottish changemakers of tomorrow. \nApps for Good are thrilled to be part of the Ada Scotland Festival again this year. Since 2000\, the number of young women in Scotland taking computing science at school/college has been on a dramatic downward trajectory. The Ada Scotland Festival is working to address that gender imbalance. \nApps for Good computing courses give students the skills and motivation to shape their future through technology\, while giving teachers the support and confidence to pick up and deliver high quality content and resources. We are an education charity committed to offering an opportunity for all. In the past 12 years\, we’ve worked with almost 240\,000 young people – with more than half of our schools in challenging circumstances and 50% of our students being girls. Thanks to the generous support of our partners\, including Spotify and Google\, our courses are 100% free to schools\, as well as volunteering their industry expertise. \nIn this session\, we’ll share more about how our computing courses map to the Curriculum for Excellence\, as well as introduce our two key courses\, Innovate for Climate Change and App for Social Action\, in detail. \nTo find out more information\, please visit our website at www.appsforgood.org. \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:[ONLINE] Journeys into Data Science
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to offer this lunchtime webinar as part of the Ada Scotland Festival 2023. \nAre you a woman or non-binary person interested in working in data science? Have you recently taken some time away from work or have been working in a different field and are interested in finding a route into data science? Do you want to learn about the routes into data science for returners or as a career change? Or are you just interested in hearing about women’s journeys into data science? Then come to Equate Scotlands’ webinar to hear about opportunities for women coming to a career in data science later in life. \nYou will hear about: \n1. Support for women students\, professionals and returners from Equate Scotland \n2. Potential academic routes for women to return to study and learn data science from Dr Gule Saman \n3. About Carla Chiodi’s journey from studying biomedicine to being Senior Engineer at 2i \nOnly 20% of workers in data and AI in the UK are women – so women are currently vastly underrepresented in data science. There are lots of opportunities in the growing area of data science. Organisations are now recruiting from wider pools than before\, increasing their diversity and the opportunities available to those interested in a career in data science. At this event you will hear from two women who are working in data science\, one in industry and one in academia\, so you can learn about how you as a women or non-binary person can get (back\, or newly) into data science. \nWho is Equate Scotland? Equate Scotland supports gender equality in the STEM and Built Environment sectors. Taking a holistic approach we work with students\, women professionals\, women returners\, employers\, academia\, and policymakers to effect change and make STEM a more inclusive space. We do this through creating opportunities for women\, supporting inclusive workplaces\, and connecting women and employers. Our work includes providing training\, experiential learning\, and meet-ups between women and potential employers\, producing resources\, conducting research\, and participating in industry networks and events. Molly Newhouse from Equate Scotland is a Training and Engagement Coordinator working with our Equate Student Network to support women and non-binary STEM students. \nWho is Gule? Gule Saman is an Assistant Professor specializing in Data Science and Computer Vision at Heriot-Watt University. She brings practical experience from previous roles at the University of Bath\, UK and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University\, Pakistan. Currently\, she serves as the Co-Programme Director of the GA Data Science Programme\, actively mentoring colleagues and evaluating educational programs. She also serves as the co-lead for the HWU STEM Inclusivity Network\, investing her time in nurturing aspiring STEM talent. In recognition of her outstanding teaching at Heriot-Watt University\, she received the “Inspiring Learning Early Career Award” (commendation) in 2021. \nWho is Carla? Carla is Brazilian and studied biomedicine in Brazil and then came to the UK in 2013 for her PhD in the same area. Now Carla works as a Senior Engineer at 2i. She is passionate about helping others and wants to support many people\, especially women in tech. Carla says “[During my Phd] I was very disappointed with academia. Science can be frustrating\, the lack of security due to the dependency on finding funding\, especially when you depend on work for a visa\, can be daunting. I was having burnout and was not in a good place in terms of mental health. During the pandemic\, I had some spare time and decided to learn coding. I always loved technology. And coding was something I could use to facilitate my job and automate some tasks. But I loved it so much that I decided to try to change my career. I used resources online in my spare time to learn the basics and build projects. Then\, I started to apply for jobs\, and that was another learning experience. Eventually\, I got a Junior position at 2i Testing and officially made the career change. I progressed inside the company\, and now I am a Senior Engineer at 2i.”

SUMMARY:BBC Scotland Presents: Exploring Tech Careers in Media
DESCRIPTION:What to expect: \nAre you keen to learn more about the STEM career opportunities available at BBC Scotland? Do you want to widen and strengthen your professional networks? If so then this is the event for you. \nJoin us at BBC Scotland for a lively panel discussion involving colleagues from the BBC Tech & Product Group and Operations team. We will be hearing how they got started in their career\, exploring gender balance in STEM roles and the importance of creating an inclusive workplace. There will also be the opportunity to meet the teams face to face with some speed networking. Including BBC staff representing: \niPlayer\, Sounds and Partnerships engineering \nBBC Research & Development \nBBC News Tech & Innovation Story Team \nArchives Technology & Services \nPost Production Operations \nWho should attend: \nThis event is open to Further and Higher Education Students\, Career Changers and Up-skillers. Due to security rules at the building attendees must be 18 year of age or above and bring ID with them on the day. \nAbout the panel: \nThe panel will be led by Laura Goodwin who joined the BBC in 2018 as Innovation Correspondent. Since then she has covered a wide range of stories including the development of the covid vaccines\, plans for a new space port in Shetland and a gene breakthrough in our understanding of breast and ovarian cancer. There have been some wonderful tech stories too\, including the robotic whale built in Scotland for the Spy in the Ocean series\, lab grown meat\, and how augmented reality is helping parents prepare for cleft palate surgery on their babies. Laura also regularly presents Reporting Scotland and the Nine\, and on occasion appears on Click. \nRachel Close is currently a Senior Responsible Data & AI Manager\, leading on the implementation of the governance framework for Responsible AI at the BBC. However\, her lifelong love of AI started many years ago when her dad handed her books by Isaac Asimov and Neil Stephenson. She moved to Scotland in 2011 partially to study Cognitive Science at the University of Edinburgh and partially to chase the landscapes from Monarch of the Glen. From there\, she spent eight years working at EY focusing on Cybersecurity strategy and governance consulting\, as well as supporting\, and eventually leading\, the EY Women’s Network for Central Scotland. She joined the BBC in September\, finally able to bring her love of AI and BBC Scotland together with her work in governance and strategy. When not on the clock she can be found walking her dog by the river\, obsessively watching and reading sci-fi and fantasy\, or choreographing fight scenes for amateur theatre companies. \nChloe Gilmour started her career as a data science apprentice at the BBC back in 2019\, opting for an apprenticeship over the traditional university route. This was carried out jointly between the BBC and the University of Edinburgh\, allowing her to gain a degree at the same time as gaining experience in the workplace. She graduated in July 2023 with and moved straight into a data scientist position inside her current team at the BBC\, Personalisation. In her current role\, Chloe works on recommendation systems for BBC News\, Sport and World Service\, helping to bring personalisation into this space to provide a better experience for users when they are using the products. \nJenn Ruxton “After 3 years at Glasgow Music Studios\, I noticed an opening for a traineeship with the BBC I had to apply. I was successful\, partly due to the real world experience I had gained from the studio job\, and fully expected to end up in radio once I had completed a rotation around different departments. However I was introduced to the Vision department\, which I had never heard of before\, but realised I had lots of transferrable skills from my audio background. Having never worked in broadcasting\, the chance to learn another new skill was very appealing\, so I became a vision engineer. Fast forward to now and I have been a Vision Supervisor since 2019 and thriving. ” \nZoe Kleinman is the BBC’s first ever Technology Editor\, appointed to the role in 2021. With over 20 years broadcasting experience\, Zoe has spent most of her career as a specialist presenter and reporter covering all areas of the tech agenda. \nFrom gadgets and games to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence\, she makes tech news accessible to a mainstream audience of millions across national and international BBC Radio\, TV and online outlets including Radio 4’s Today programme\, BBC World TV and the UK’s most watched news shows. \nZoe has raced drones in the Nevada desert\, taken a backseat drive in a driverless car\, spent the night in a house full of robots and climbed Mount Everest in Virtual Reality. \nShe’s reported on Elon Musk’s controversial takeover at Twitter\, the volatile world of cryptocurrency\, the gender bias in Silicon Valley\, Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal\, and her exclusive reports about the parents whose children accidentally spend thousands of pounds inside video and mobile games was discussed by politicians and led to a parliamentary committee hearing on gaming and gambling. \nZoe’s wider journalistic skills are hugely respected across the BBC and in 2020 Zoe was asked to work as a senior journalist on the BBC News team covering the Covid-19 pandemic.

SUMMARY:[ONLINE] Ada Lovelace Day at CEMPOWER
DESCRIPTION:This year we will be celebrating Ada Lovelace Day on Tuesday 10th October. \nAda Lovelace Day (ALD) highlights the achievements of women in science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics. Launched in 2009 as a celebration of women in science\, the event promotes programs that encourage girls and women to pursue careers in STEM. \nThe only legitimate daughter of Lord Byron\, Ada Lovelace is widely known as the first person to recognise the potential of early computers and published what is known as an algorithm. Before most others\, Lovelace recognised that computers could do more than simple number-crunching\, opening the door to complex functions and ushering in the modern era of computing. \nIn 2009 Suw Charman-Anderson launched ALD and it is now held on the second Tuesday of October every year. There are central events organised by Finding Ada\, more information is available at findingada.com \nADL has become an international celebration of the achievements of women STEM\, helping to increase the profile of women in STEM subjects and help create role models. \nTo celebrate this event we will be holding interview with some of our amazing women in computing and engineering. \n\nProfessor Shushma Patel\, PVC Dean Faculty of Computing\, Engineering and Media\nTanvir Allidina\, Lecturer in Embedded Systems\nCeline Ilo\, Postgraduate Research Student in Engineering\n\nThe interviews will be published on our Ada Lovelace blog on Tuesday 10th October.

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Day Challenge at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths. To celebrate\, RAL will be hosting a hybrid (online and in-person) computing challenge day for classes of students from Year 8 or 9. \nThe event is designed to introduce students to the excitement of computing – teams will be given a (top secret!) challenge and will spend the day using Arduinos and computer programming to find a solution. \nThe day will also include a behind-the-scenes tour of our scientific computing facilities (in-person for those on site\, virtual for those joining us online)\, as well as a short careers talk. \nAfter an introduction\, given in person and streamed live \, each team (on-site) or school (online) will be introduced to their mentors\, who will help and support the teams throughout the day. Students joining us from school will need access to a computer with internet access to complete the exercises. The activities can be completed entirely virtually\, using a browser. \nThe day has been designed to be flexible so that school breaks can be accommodated – and if you would like\, you can join for the tour and careers talk (14:20-14:50) without taking part in the exercise: please tick that option when registering. \nDuring this event\, each class will work with mentors from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory – this means that our capacity is limited by the number of mentors we have available. We will let all schools know if they have been successful in obtaining places by 5 July 2023 after registration closes on 4 July 2023. \nWhen registering\, please indicate whether you would like to join us in-person or online.
