DESCRIPTION:Charla: «Factores filogenéticos y ecológicos que determinan la evolución de la comunicación de las ballenas»\nImpartido por: Dra. Laura J. May-Collado (Departamento de Biología\, Universidad de Vermont\, EEUU)\n\nResumen: Si bien las señales acústicas de las ballenas dentadas se han estudiado ampliamente durante más de 70 años\, todavía nos falta una caracterización completa y estandarizada de su repertorio ‘vocal’. Esto representa una brecha de conocimiento importante que no solo afecta nuestra capacidad para evaluar hipótesis sobre el papel de la sociabilidad y el ambiente en su comunicación\, sino que también limita nuestra capacidad para estudiar las adaptaciones al ambiente y la función de la señal vocal\, y lo que ambos podrían revelan sobre sus habilidades cognitivas y de aprendizaje. From 5-hole punch tape to Python! Explore how programming languages have progressed over the decades and solve puzzles using them to develop depth of understanding and choose your favourite. \nBBC BASIC [TNMOC\, BBC Classroom] \nTo understand the future trajectory of Programing\, we need to consider its history; go back in time to our 80s classroom and build on newfound understanding of programming languages by writing your own\, customisable\, game of Snake on our original\, working BBC Micros. Without realising it\, crocheters interpret their own patterns\, thus becoming “computers”. Does this then make crochet a form of programming language? Issues of equity\, diversity and inclusivity are linked to the well-being of communities. As architecture works to shape communities through the built environment\, architects and architectural education have a vital role in developing equitable\, diverse\, and inclusive environments to promote the health and well-being of its inhabitants\, both physically and mentally. In many ways\, equity in the built environment directly results from equitable architectural practice. \nLike many related fields in science and engineering\, architecture faces inequitable experiences towards marginalized groups\, including women. Pay gaps\, training\, and leadership opportunities are just some of the inequalities women often face in architectural practice. \nWith the industry shifting towards seeking innovative design practices to address the climate emergency\, digitalization and building information modelling technologies are quickly developing as necessities in the design field. If not strategically planned for\, these rapidly evolving technologies could negatively impact women’s ability to receive training and support to develop the skills and support their future in the field. \nDeveloped as part of the WISE Planet program\, this Leadership in Equity Action Plan (LEAP) project– Supporting Equity in Architecture (SEA) Through the Regenerative Design Process – seeks to provide an opportunity for women to become leaders in action against climate change. This project will work to build an open educational resource databank\, build training opportunities\, and form a robust mentoring network to support women as the industry rapidly evolves. The program will be developed focusing on a regenerative design methodology where its practices seek to move beyond sustainability to form a positive partnership between buildings\, communities\, and nature.

DESCRIPTION:The Fleet Science Center is celebrating Ada Lovelace Day by celebrating Women in STEM with TWO events on Tuesday\, October 11. SUMMARY:[ONLINE] WORAN Land Lecture
DESCRIPTION:WORAN held its first Annual Networking Event in 2019\, just prior to the pandemic. The event has now been renamed the WORAN Land Lecture\, in honour of Professor Ailsa Land\, pioneer of branch-and-bound and computational OR\, role model and mentor. \nThe date of the Land Lecture is Ada Lovelace Day\, a day founded to celebrate the achievements of women in STEM. \nEveryone is welcome regardless of gender. Whilst the event is primarily for women in OR\, we welcome everyone to join us and support the ORS Women in OR and Analytics Network! \nThe best solution to one gender imbalance may not come from a forum which creates a different gender imbalance. By including male perspectives and experiences\, the conversation is widened\, builds awareness and create allies.

DESCRIPTION:Three years ago\, on Ada Lovelace Day\, Ada Manchester was launched by Andy Burnham. \nFast forward two years and we’ve doubled our apprenticeship in take and grown the team. \nCome and meet our apprentices\, the Ada team\, our industry partners and board members to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day and the achievements of women in tech. \n Celebrate with us! \nOur apprentices will benefit from meeting our wonderful supporters and external guests to hear inspiring stories. \nCome and inspire the next generation of diverse digital talent and help yourself to a cake or two. \nA selection of afternoon tea delights will be served during the event. \nWe have been running two campaigns this year… We’ll share this year’s Digital Heroes and Tell Your Story\, stories on the day. \nEmily Abbots from Culture Shift will also be sharing her story of her journey into tech. \nEmily Abbott (pictured below) is the Chief of Staff for Manchester-based business Culture Shift\, a tech for good organisation that believe in a future world of work and study that is safe\, happy and supportive for everyone\, everywhere. Emily will be sharing experiences of her journey into the world of tech from the perspective of an Ops person. From discovering her passion for working in tech start-ups\, to overcoming gender and disability stereotypes to achieve her goals of operating in an executive role for a scaling\, mission-led tech business.  \nSee you soon! \n#AlwaysAda \nMy Digital Hero (Watch last year’s submissions in the video) \nThis campaign seeks to highlight inspirational women leaders in tech and help others learn more about their contributions to digital industries. \nTogether we will celebrate role models in the tech sector and in turn\, inspire more young women to pursue a digital education and consider a career in tech with Ada. \nTell Your Story \nThis campaign seeks to highlight women in tech and help others learn more about their experiences in pursuing a digital career path. \nThe most inspirational way to engage a 14-18 year old is through personal connections. \nBy sharing your story\, young women will be able to relate to you as someone who looks like them and in turn inspire them to pursue a digital education and/or career.
