DESCRIPTION:We had a group come into our school who performed a spellbinding interactive show about the computing pioneer\, entitled ADA. ADA. ADA. \nWe watched as the team put together the most spectacular dress we have ever seen. They spoke about the technology it used to light up and twinkle in lots of variations! \nWe’ve been studying all about Ada in Year 4 and have written detailed biographies about her life. What better way to finish off our unit of work than by meeting a re-imagined version of the lady herself! ​

DESCRIPTION:As part of Brighton Digital Festival and in honour of Ada Lovelace Day (9th October)\, Sussex Innovation Centre is hosting its first hackathon! The inaugural SINC_HACK is based around the theme of >17%. \nWomen make up just 17% of employees the UK tech sector\, and only 17% of start-ups have female founders. The problem has many contributing factors\, from the stigma around girls going into STEM subjects\, to the gender pay gap\, unconscious bias in the workplace and under-representation of women in management roles. \nOn Saturday 6th October\, we’ll welcome teams of developers\, creatives\, freelancers\, students and researchers\, who will work together over 12 hours to find and design innovative solutions to these challenges and more. There’ll be several bitesize learning and creative exercises throughout the day\, delivered by the Sussex Innovation team and our partners. Finally\, food\, drink and SINC_HACK goodie bags will be provided\, as well as prizes for the winning team. \nPlaces are limited so once you have registered your interest you will be sent an application form to complete. Successful applicants will then be sent a “hack pack” with full details of the day.

We will be collecting during the service for Unseen\, the anti modern slavery charity.

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace – an Artistic Installation
DESCRIPTION:At entrance of the Cardiff School of Technologies and Cardiff School of Management at Cardiff Metropolitan University we are celebrating Ada Lovelace day (9th of October) with an artistic installation of an image of Ada Lovelace. The machine control of the CNC machine that made the wooden grid holding the balloons was originally conceived by Ada in 1843. \nThis coloured image is a simplistic use of the painting technique pointillism used by Georges Seurat and Pal Signac. A section of a painting of Ada was selected\, using a computer its size was reduce to a 30 by 30 pixel image\, and its colour pallet was reduce to match 8 coloured balloons. \nThe final image reflects the activities of many computer enthusiasts in the 60-70s\, who would creatively define images using the dots and characters on printers.\n————–\nWrth fynedfa ysgol technolegau Caerdydd ac ysgol reolaeth Caerdydd ym Mhrifysgol Fetropolitan Caerdydd Rydym yn dathlu diwrnod ADA Lovelace (10fed o Hydref) gyda gosodiad artistig o lun o ADA Lovelace. DESCRIPTION:Join our communal update on 8 Oct from 5-9pm to improve the coverage of women and diversity in science on Wikipedia!\nWikipedia is the first to admit that they have some big gender and diversity gaps. In 2011 only 10% of wiki contributors were female and in 2018 only 17% of entries are about women. Let’s help change that! \nWe’re looking for both experienced editors plus those with no past experience (but a lot of enthusiasm for writing and/or fact-checking!). Anyone can participate! \nWe’re super excited to have the fabulous Dr. Jess Wade joining us as our lead editor (she’s been running her own one-woman mission to get women the recognition they deserve on Wikipedia). \nWe’ll be working through the backlog of Wikipedia pages to help improve the coverage of women and diversity in science on Wikipedia. \nJoin us remotely or in person at our offices in Kings Cross\, London\, where you can drop in at any time between 5-9pm on Monday 8 October (the following day happens to be the fabulous Ada Lovelace Day Live). \nWe’ll have snacks on hand to feed those brains!

Esta actividad se realiza en el marco de la exposición Glass Room Experience\, una iniciativa de Tactical Tech y la Fundación Mozilla que pretende sensibilizar sobre nuestros datos personales. El objetivo del taller es facilitar un espacio de aprendizaje y reflexión crítica sobre los datos en relación con la programación de aplicaciones\, a través de una metodología práctica y lúdica\, apta para cualquier nivel de conocimientos previos.  \n\n\nEsta semana se celebra el Ada Lovelace Day\, en homenaje a la primera mujer programadora de la historia. Investigaremos aplicaciones como Whatsapp\, Instagram\, Youtube\, Twitter o Facebook para entender porqué nos invitan a pasar tanto tiempo conectadas y cómo hacen negocio con nuestros datos.  \n\n\nEl diseño de aplicaciones y redes sociales es un ámbito de especial preocupación en la educación con jóvenes. Aunque cada vez aprenden más pronto a usar estas aplicaciones o incluso a programar en la escuela\, existen pocos espacios donde reflexionar sobre su diseño\, su uso y su impacto que les permitan utilizarlas con responsabilidad. SUMMARY:Suffrage Science Awards- Maths and Computing
DESCRIPTION:The Suffrage Science scheme was founded seven years ago by the Medical Research Council’s London Institute of Medical Sciences (then Clinical Sciences Centre). It celebrates and inspires women in science\, creating a self-perpetuating cohort of talent that will encourage others to enter science and reach senior leadership roles. The awards themselves are heirloom items of jewellery commissioned from students of the art and design college\, Central St Martins-UAL\, who worked with scientists to create pieces inspired by research. The pieces also draw inspiration from the jewellery of the Suffragette movement from which the award scheme takes its name. \nThe scheme has three strands: \n\nLife Sciences (est. 2011)\nEngineering and Physical Sciences (est. 2013)\nMaths and Computing (est. 2016)\n\nEach awardee holds the award for 2 years before they pass on their heirloom to their chosen recipient. \nOn the 8th October our Maths and Computing award holders will pass on their Suffrage Science award to their nominated recipient. \nAlongside the awards there will be a reception and panel discussion hosted by former BBC journalist Susan Watts. \nPlaces are limited but if you’re interested in attending please email: geco@lms.mrc.ac.uk \nThis event is run in partnership with the British Library and the Turing Institute.
