SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Day Celebration Denver - Women in STEM
DESCRIPTION:Mix & Mingle with Lightning Talks by local developers discussing their experience getting into the STEM field as a woman and their most influential women in tech. \nAda Lovelace Day is an international celebration of Women in Science and Technology and aims to raise the profile of women in STEM by encouraging people around the world to talk about the women whose work they admire. We will be celebrating with a Mix & Mingle and Lightning Talks where we discuss the most influential tech women in our own lives and our own experiences getting into the field. \nThink about the women you know or have heard of in tech/science. We’re not looking for everyone to speak about superstars\, just someone whom you admire. Perhaps it’s your colleague who does a really good job\, or your mum\, or a friend. If you stop and think for a while\, we’re sure that somewhere in your past or present you’ll find a woman to speak about on Ada Lovelace Day. \nOr think about your own experience getting into the tech/science world as a woman. Think about the accomplishments and achievements you’ve made since the very beginning. We’re sure there are breakthrough moments from your experiences that are valuable and worth sharing with others on this day of celebration. \nTo register as a speaker\, please reach out to Caitlin Plaza: caitlin@thinkful.com (Lightning talks will be no more than 2-3 minutes per speaker) \n*NOTE: ALL genders are welcomed and encouraged to participate!

SUMMARY:ALD Happy Hour with Lightning Talks
DESCRIPTION:Happy hour with Lightning Talks by local developers discussing their most influential women in tech. \nAda Lovelace Day is held every year on the second Tuesday of October\, though it is celebrated around the world all month long. It is an international celebration of Women in Science and Technology and aims to raise the profile of women in STEM by encouraging people around the world to talk about the women whose work they admire. We will be celebrating with a happy hour and Lightning Talks where we discuss the most influential tech women in our own lives. \nFirst\, have a think about the women you know or have heard of in tech/science. \nTo register as a speaker please reach out to Shannon Gallagher: shannon@thinkful.com (Lightning talks will be no more than 2-3 minutes per speaker) \n*NOTE: ALL genders are welcomed and encouraged to participate! \n

SUMMARY:Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Women in Computing Festival 2018: Her Story \nWhat do the most beautiful actress of the 1930s and 40s and the inventor whose concepts were the basis of cell phone and bluetooth technology have in common? They are both Hedy Lamarr\, the Hollywood icon who was the inspiration for Snow White and Cat Woman and a technological trailblazer who perfected a secure radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes during WWII. \nWeaving interviews and clips with never-before-heard audio tapes of Hedy speaking on the record about her incredible life—from her beginnings as an Austrian Jewish emigre to her scandalous nude scene in the 1933 film Ecstasy to her glittering Hollywood life to her ground-breaking\, but completely uncredited inventions to her latter years when she became a recluse\, impoverished and almost forgotten—BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY brings to light the story of an unusual and accomplished woman\, spurned as too beautiful to be smart\, but a role model to this day. \nInstead of closing at 5pm we will stay open to show the 2017 film of this remarkable woman. Ticket prices include all day entry to the museum. Refreshments will be provided. \nThere will be a short discussion after the film on the controversy that surrounds Hedy Lamarr\, her acting\, her beauty and her inventions. Do we want Hedy Lamarr as a role model today? \n\nFilm starts: 6:30pm\nRating: 12\nRuntime: 90 minutes

SUMMARY:Wikipedia Edit-a-thon DC: Ada Lovelace Day Edition
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an international day to celebrate the contributions of self-identifying women to science\, technology\, engineering\, and math. So to celebrate their achievements\, 500 Women Scientists and our allies\, as well as the DC Science Writer’s Association\, are gathering at the West End DC Public Library on Saturday\, October 13th to share their work on Wikipedia’s pages. \nWhile Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world\, notching up more than 32 million views a day\, less than 18% of its English-language biographies are about women. So in honor of Ada Lovelace—and her contributions to mathematics and computing—we’ll work to add more entries to Wikipedia and give you the tools to keep making the Internet less sexist after our Wiki-thon. All you have to do is come armed with a laptop or tablet! \nWe ask participants to only do a few things before October 13th: \n\nCome with your laptop or tablet.\nCreate a Wikipedia account here.\nMake your edits count! Register on our dashboard to track our collective edits and measure our impact as Wiki-thons take place around the world over the week.\n(Optional) If you’d like to do some training on how to edit beforehand to familiarize yourself\, you can check out a tutorial here. Of course\, we’ll go over the ins and outs of editing during the event as well so this is totally optional!\n\nTo read more about why editing Wikipedia is such a powerful tool to combat gender inequity in science\, you can check out this editorial in Nature.

SUMMARY:Lovelace and Cupcakes
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our office in Finsbury square for an evening full of fun\, code\, cupcakes and a big pat on the back to all the women in STEM. \nThe event will feature a “code for cupcakes” challenge where participants will learn regular expressions from scratch while earning cupcakes for each correct answer. \nRegular expressions\, also known as “regex”\, allow you to extract information from text and are super useful in everything from Microsoft Word to all major programming languages! \nNo previous experience is necessary\, just bring your laptops\, and you will walk out a regex deity\, full of sugary goodness and possibly an extra dress size. Ah\, the things we do for knowledge!… 🙂 \nWe will also host a panel discussion with our current graduates and female software engineers who will be happy to answer questions around the topics of career and what it’s like to work in the industry. \nFor those who would like to continue chatting\, there is a nice pub next door. \nIf you are a woman or a non-binary person studying STEM subjects and considering a career in the tech industry\, we would love to see you there. \nThe seats are limited and to secure yours\, please sign up early. \nDrinks and nibbles will be provided! \nThis independent event is part of Ada Lovelace Day\, a worldwide celebration of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths (STEM). \nFind out more about Ada Lovelace Day at findingada.com and on Twitter @findingada\, and read a longer Ada Lovelace biography at findingada.com/book/ada-lovelace-victorian-computing-visionary. \nBanner image is borrowed from the fantastic graphic novel The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage: The (Mostly) True Story of the First Computer by Sydney Padua.
