SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace: The Programmer\, the Maths\, and the Myths
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace is widely celebrated as “the first programmer”\, the “enchantress of numbers” whose unique “poetical science” enabled her to make startling predictions about modern computing in a famous 1843 paper about Charles Babbage’s proposed analytical engine. \nIn this talk\, Professor Ursula Martin (CBE FRSE\, University of Oxford) will separate fact from myth\, talk about what the famous paper actually says\, and look at Lovelace as a member of a dynamic community of nineteenth century British scientists. \nIn particular\, she will high-light recent work on Lovelace’s mathematical “correspondence course” with Augustus De Morgan\, which shows a sophisticated mathematical education and understanding\, enabling her to write the paper and pursue many other mathematical and scientific interests. \n\nThe event is open to all but aimed at a 16+ audience. \n\nTime: 6:30pm \n* \nThis event is part of our October 2017 festival ‘Computing History: Where did all the Women Go?

SUMMARY:Free movie screening: Hidden Figures
DESCRIPTION:HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson)\, Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA\, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit\, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence\, turned around the Space Race\, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big. Written by 20th Century Fox

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Day
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration day for the achievements of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths (STEM). It aims to increase the profile of women in these areas\, and\, in doing so\, create new role models who will encourage more girls into STEM careers and support women already working in STEM. Every year\, people around the world organize their own events for Ada Lovelace Day. The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences is excited to join this important celebration and\, together with Ryerson University\, organize our own Ada Lovelace Day in Toronto. We will have a keynote talk given by an outstanding scientist\, Lila Kari\, Professor and University Research Chair in the Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo\, followed by a moderated panel on emerging research opportunities\, diversity\, and inclusion. After that\, attendees will have an opportunity to meet and network with the keynote speaker and panellists over an informal reception.

SUMMARY:Avondale STEMsters – Celebrate Ada Lovelace Day
DESCRIPTION:Avondale College STEMsters (year 12 & 13 female students) invited year 9 and 10 female students to an ‘awareness session’ as part of celebrating Ada Lovelace day. The STEMsters gave a presentation highlighting who Ada Lovelace was\, as well as other prominent key Women in STEM\, and how the junior students could get involved in the groups’ support network and activities to help them in their STEM subjects. \nThe College’s female STEM teachers were invited by the STEMsters to give a brief summary of how they got into their STEM subject and this was followed by a Q & A from students. The celebration was complete with baked goodies\, courtesy  of the STEMsters. The junior students then took part in a STEMster kahoot quiz and a challenge of creating a poster about a current New Zealand Woman in STEM – winners and posters advertised in the College’s Heartbeat magazine later this term.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Hidden Figures

Johnson (Taraji P. Henson)\, Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)\, a visionary trio who crossed all gender and race lines\, inspiring generations to dream big. Based on true events this is a truly inspirational tale of women standing up against racism and sexism. \nArrive 6:30pm. Film starts 6.45pm. \nFilm is rated PG. \n* \nThis event is part of our October 2017 festival ‘Computing History: Where did all the Women Go?

SUMMARY:How we got here: Women in Computing at Heriot-Watt University
DESCRIPTION:This year marked a historic occasion in the Computer Science department at Heriot-Watt University: the number of our female professors doubled from two (Ruth Aylett and Fairouz Kamareddine) to four with the promotion of Verena Rieser and Helen Hastie.  Join us as these four professors discuss how they ended up in computing at Heriot-Watt: the education and career choices they made\, their experiences of working in computing and the interesting and sometimes unexpected twists and turns their lives and careers took. \nThis independent event is part of Ada Lovelace Day\, a worldwide celebration of women in STEM.
