SUMMARY:Out of the frying pan and onto the firing range
DESCRIPTION:In autumn 2016\, after working as a Lecturer and Hearing Scientist at the University of Southampton for a decade\, Rachel van Besouw took a huge risk and ventured outside of academia for the first time. A few months later on a wintery\, overcast February day with a temperature of 1 degree Celsius and a biting wind\, she found herself in the middle of Salisbury Plain observing Royal Marine Commandos train for chemical warfare threats. Had she made a big mistake? \nIn this Ada Lovelace Day talk\, Rachel will discuss the experiences that made her reconsider being a lifelong academic and motivated her to change career. She will also describe her experiences transitioning from University Lecturer to Defence Scientist\, what it is like to work behind the double fence at Porton Down\, and will contrast the working practices and equality and diversity initiatives at the University of Southampton with those of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. \nThe talk will run from 14.00 to 14.45\, and will be followed by a Q&A until 15.00. There will be a chance to network\, with nibbles\, from 15.00 to 16.00.

DESCRIPTION:Science communicator\, Dr Emily Grossman will work with our undergraduates to consider why science communication is so important and to help them share their passion for science (11am-1pm). In an afternoon lecture (2-3pm)\, open to all of the University of Southampton\, she will discuss why there are still so few women in science careers and what can be done to redress the balance\, speaking from her own experiences. This will be followed by an informal discussion and get together (3-4pm)\, open to all member of the Centre for Biological Sciences. \n

DESCRIPTION:Who wants a free biscuit?? \nTuesday 13th October 2015: Ada Lovelace Day Celebrations \nAda Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths (STEM). \nOur University-wide Women in Science\, Engineering and Technology (WiSET) group is working on a massive challenge to celebrate the women in our STEM subjects by trying encourage ALL our staff (men and women!) to stop for five minutes and have a biscuit break! \nWe are putting together Ada Lovelace biscuits which will be available on the Highfield Campus from 11:00-12:00 on  Tuesday 13th October. \nThis activity will replace their usual coffee morning and is open to all the groups across the campus. \nThe biscuits are topped with an icing topper displaying the Ada Lovelace roundel\, picture to follow once they are prepared! \nThey are free and available for all academics\, staff\, PhD students.  The rules… everyone has to stop what they are doing for a few minutes\, eat a biscuit and during that time think of any inspiring women within their field of research. They can also add a name to our database of inspiring women.
