SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Day Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths (STEM). \nThis year\, the Centre for Creative and Cultural Research is hosting a breakfast for  UC Women in STEM on 13th October\, 7am – 8.15am in The Hub. This breakfast forms part of the Mobile Makers research program which is framed by the idea of STEM to STEAM – the inclusion of art in the traditionally science-based fields of STEM. \nThe Centre will be presenting two new creative works inspired by Ada Lovelace’s research and practice. We are also curating a small exhibition of university collection items related to computer programming. \nMore about UC WiSTEM \nUC WISTEM aims to create an environment that fosters the growth and development of women\, from HDR students to senior academics\, so they can achieve their full potential as they pursue a career in science\, technology\, engineering or mathematics at the University of Canberra. WISTEM provides a supportive and friendly forum to discuss and propose solutions to issues experienced by women in STEM\, as well as providing mentoring and support at all stages of their career.  WISTEM is an advocate for gender equity issues in STEM\, helping UC to maintain its status as an Employer of Choice for Women. \nBreakfast is free but we ask that you register here.\nWe look forward to seeing you on the day. \nTwitter: @MobileMakersAu \nWho is Ada? \nAda Lovelace is widely held to have been the first computer programmer. Close friends with inventor Charles Babbage\, Lovelace was intrigued by his Analytical Engine and in 1842\, she translated a description of it by italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea. Babbage asked her to expand the article\, “as she understood [it] so well”\, and this was when she wrote several early ‘computer programs’. Ada Lovelace died of cancer at 36\, her potential tragically unfulfilled. Learn more about Ada…   (Finding Ada\, 2015)
