SUMMARY:ALD: Cafe Scientifique: A 21st Century alternative to the gas network
DESCRIPTION:The Ada Lovelace Day talk with Lisa Treseder from Kensa Heat Pumps. She will be talking about A 21st Century alternative to the Gas Network. \nLisa is Director of Business Development at Kensa Utilities. She says: Join us for a comprehensive session on the role of heat pumps in the future of sustainable heating and cooling. This talk will dispel common myths and misinformation about heat pumps\, examining their efficiency\, versatility\, and ability to handle both heating and cooling—an increasingly crucial feature as global temperatures rise. We’ll explore various heat sources\, including air\, ground\, water\, and waste heat\, showing how heat pumps can be applied in diverse settings\, from homes to large buildings. \nThe session will also cover strategies to reduce capital and upfront costs\, and we’ll look at emerging business models like heat-as-a-service\, offering more affordable and flexible solutions. \nFinally\, we’ll compare the UK’s progress with Europe and examine the policy changes needed to speed up adoption here. Whether you’re a homeowner\, policymaker\, or interested in energy-efficient heating and cooling\, this talk will provide the insights you need to understand how heat pumps can shape a low-carbon\, climate-resilient future. \nLisa Treseder is an accomplished innovator in renewable energy and heat pump technology. Five years ago\, Lisa joined Kensa to work on their first large Innovate UK project\, Energy Superhub Oxford\, focusing on reducing heat pump running costs through use of smart controls optimized for time-of-use tariffs. \nThis event will be live at the Cellar Bar at Kennaway House\, Coburg Road EX10 8NG. You will be expected to pay £2.50 entrance which includes a hot drink. Please come prepared. Everyone welcome. \nAda Lovelace Day is an annual event held to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions of women to science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics. It is named after mathematician and computer science pioneer Ada Lovelace (1815 – 1852). \nThis event is sponsored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers\, South West.

SUMMARY:Talk: It’s not rocket science with Dr Emma Ryan
DESCRIPTION:It’s not rocket science – An explanation as to why building engines for spacecraft isn’t rocket science. \nThe talk will cover the maths of rocket science\, a brief history of space travel\, why the engineering behind building rockets is more complex than the maths and science\, and some complex thermodynamics using coloured plastic balls to demonstrate.
