SUMMARY:Evening Exchange: Poetical Science
DESCRIPTION:‘You will not concede me philosophical poetry. Invert the order! Will you give me poetical philosophy\, poetical science?’ – Ada Lovelace in a letter to her mother \nAda Lovelace was Lord Byron’s daughter and she inherited his talent for writing. At age 12 she wrote a book called ‘Flyology’ that included a design for a mechanical flying horse\, but her mother told her off for neglecting her studies and ‘Flyology’ was left unfinished. \nWhat might have happened next? With the beginnings of a tale provided by Interactive Fiction as your springboard\, join Emily Short\, a renowned author in the IF community\, and have fun learning how to create an interactive story and bring it to completion. \nThe first in our Evening Exchange series\, this event will involve working on the piece as a group\, followed by a brainstorming game and an individual writing jam.

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Discover the remarkable story of Ada Lovelace\, a Victorian pioneer of the computer age\, in our free exhibition celebrating the bicentenary of her birth. \nCalled the ‘Enchantress of Numbers’ by Charles Babbage\, Lovelace was the daughter of infamous poet Lord Byron and the admired intellect Annabella Milbanke. She studied science and maths at a time when women rarely had access to such subjects and collaborated with Babbage on his calculating machines. Lovelace is celebrated for imagining the machine’s potential\, foreshadowing modern computing a century later. \nOpening on Ada Lovelace Day\, the exhibition brings together for the first time Lovelace’s portraits\, letters and notes\, alongside the incredible calculating machines she worked with.
