SUMMARY:ORSSA Ada Lovelace Day 2019 – Women in Superposition
DESCRIPTION:Women in Superposition\nMachine learning has established itself firmly in many industries. However\, problems arise when applications become too complex – models either slow down or become intractable. Combining traditional machine learning with simple techniques from quantum mechanics shifts models into a new paradigm where these problems do not necessarily occur. In this talk\, I will briefly introduce quantum computing and the idea of quantum machine learning along with some real-world applications. I will also highlight extraordinary work being done in our research group by fellow female scientists\, such as quantum teleportation and quantum-biological effects on the brain. \n\nAmira Abbas\nAmira is a researcher in the Quantum Research Group at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a former research scientist at STANLIB Multi-Manager. Her current work focuses on the intersection of quantum mechanics and machine learning theory in order to solve problems that are not possible to compute classically. She holds a bachelor of business science degree in actuarial science and is pursuing her master’s degree in physics.

SUMMARY:ORSSA Ada Lovelace Day 2018
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nAs humans we are placed in complex environments\, where we are required to provide solutions to the problems that we encounter on a daily basis. This can be within your career\, your personal life\, or your business\, and we know that many times solving the problem isn’t as easy as we’d like or hoped it to be. \nDuring this talk\, I’d like to walk the audience through problem solving techniques that I use on a daily basis whilst building software that impacts peoples lives. I’d like to use this opportunity to discuss some of the more complex problems that I’ve had to solve over the past year\, and focus on the process to obtaining valuable solutions. \nRidhwana Khan \nRidhwana Khan is an entrepreneur and a software development consultant. \nAs a software developer\, she is constantly fulfilling her passion for finding solutions to problems that meaningfully impact people’s lives. \nRidhwana was chosen as one of the ‘2018 Inspiring 50 women in STEM in South Africa’. She had co-founded a software development company\, Zero One Bespoke Software Development in 2015. \nRidhwana is involved in multiple activities that empower women in tech. She is a co-organiser of a Ladies that UX and Women in Tech meetup group that serves a support system for women to learn more about UX and to build meaningful relationships. \nRidhwana earned a Bachelor of Science Degree\, majoring in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics.

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Day - Operations Research Society of South Africa
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science\, technology engineering and maths. \nThe Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA) is taking this opportunity to present the commendable work of two of our own\, Dr Angela Rademeyer and Dr Sheetal Silal. \nINFECTIOUS DISEASES: HOW CAN MATHEMATICAL MODELLING CONTRIBUTE?  \nDr Sheetal Silal \nWith many countries around the world working to control and eliminate infectious diseases\, mathematical modellers have the potential to make unique contributions to informing policy and guiding research. From strategic planning to resource allocation\, drug resistance to the assessment of new tools\, this talk will focus on ways that mathematical modelling can contribute to reducing the burden of disease with examples of current projects in Africa and the Asia-Pacific.
