SUMMARY:The Scientific Life of Ada Lovelace - a talk by Professor Ursula Martin CBE FREng FRSE DSc
DESCRIPTION:The scientific life of Ada Lovelace – a talk for Ada Lovelace Day 2019 by Professor Ursula Martin CBE FREng FRSE DSc\n\nAda\, Countess of Lovelace (1815-1852) is best known for a remarkable article about Babbage’s unbuilt computer\, the Analytical Engine\, which not only presented the first documented computer program\, but also\, going well beyond Babbage’s ideas of computers as manipulating numbers\, outlined their creative possibilities and the limits of what they could do.The comprehensive archive of Lovelace’s papers preserved in Oxford’s Bodleian Library displays Lovelace’s wide scientific interests\, and her grasp of the potential of mathematics as a uniting link between the material and symbolic worlds. \nIn this talk we start to explore Lovelace\, her background\, her scientific ideas and her contemporary legacy\, and reflective more broadly on the role of history of computing in present day thinking about the discipline \n\nProfessor Ursula Martin CBE FREng FRSE DSc is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh\, and a Visiting Professor in Mathematics at the University of Oxford. After a career in research and research leadership spanning many aspects of computing and mathematics\, she now works on the context\, long term development and impact of fundamental ideas in computer science\nProgramme for the event:\n\n5.45pm – 6pm: Arrive at the venue\n6pm – 6.45pm: The scientific life of Ada Lovelace – talk by Professor Ursula Martin\n6.45pm – 7pm: Audience Q&A\n7pm – 8pm: Drinks and nibbles reception\n8pm: Event close\n\n\nThis talk is part of a day of activities at the University of Edinburgh to celebrate Women in STEM for Ada Lovelace Day 2019. \nFor more details please visit our Ada Lovelace Day website.

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Day 2017 at the University of Edinburgh
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others? Did you know that\, as of July 2017\, approximately only 17.03% of the biographies on Wikipedia relate to notable women? \nOn Tuesday 10th October 2017\, the University’s Information Services team are running an edit-a-thon to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day 2017 which is an international celebration day of the achievements of women in science\, technology\, engineering and maths (STEM). \nThere will be a range of guest speakers in the morning followed by fun technology activities from 11am to 2pm. Full Wikipedia editing training will be given at 2-3pm. Thereafter the afternoon’s Women in STEM Wikipedia editathon will focus on improving the quality of articles related to Women in STEM! \nAda Lovelace \nMary Somerville \nWorking together with liaison librarians\, archivists & academic colleagues we will provide training on how to edit and participate in an open knowledge community. New editors are very welcome and participants will be supported to develop Wikipedia articles; creating new role models for young and old alike. \nCome along to learn about how Wikipedia works and contribute a greater understanding of Women in STEM!

If you’d like to help redress this imbalance\, new editors are very welcome and participants will be supported to develop Wikipedia articles; creating new role models for young and old alike. \nWikipedia editathon on Women in STEM 1-5pm: \nFull Wikipedia editing training will be given at 1-2pm. Thereafter the afternoon’s editathon from 2-5pm will focus on improving the quality of Wikipedia articles related to Women in STEM! \nThe event page can be accessed here: http://bit.ly/2cGapkn \nThe focus might shift a little this year to female mentors given that Mary Somerville is to grace the £10 note this year so our event will have an extra focus on women in maths too. \nWho was Ada Lovelace? \nAda Lovelace (1815–1852)\, the only legitimate child of the poet George\, Lord Byron and his wife Anne Isabella Milbanke\, was an English mathematician and writer\, chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage‘s early mechanical general-purpose computer\, the Analytical Engine. Her notes on the engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. As a result\, she is often regarded as the first computer programmer with her work a major influence on Alan Turing & inspiring countless others. There’s now a graphic novel of her short but brilliant life and you can read more about her here. \nWant to come?  \nFor booking purposes\, the day is split in two parts: talks & technology activities in the morning and the Women in STEM Wikipedia editathon in the afternoon. \nYou can attend both morning and afternoon sessions or just one. \n\nTo book a place for the morning activities (10am to 1pm):\n\nClick here for Ada Lovelace Day – talks & fun technology activities\n\n\nTo book a place for the afternoon editathon (1pm to 5pm):\n\nClick here for the Women in STEM Wikipedia edit-a-thon\n\n\n\nTime for lunch?  \nFood can be brought into the room and the fun technology activities from 11am to 1pm can be dropped in and out of. Tea & coffee will be provided and there is also the Library Cafe downstairs where you can get refreshments and a bite to eat. \nNot a student or staff member of the university? A limited number of tickets are available through Eventbrite (links are on the event page). \nWant to take part remotely? Drop me an email at ewan.mcandrew@ed.ac.uk \nSuggestions for notable Women in STEM who could & should be represented on Wikipedia? \nFeel free to suggest name of notable women we could include as part of this day of celebration. Email me at ewan.mcandrew@ed.ac.uk \nHope to see you there! \nEwan McAndrew\nWikimedian in Residence
