SUMMARY:TechTalk: Lily Madar - Programming with Yarn
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Ada Lovelace Day for an fascinating talk on craft & programming. \nComputers can take an unexpected form; historically they started as humans. Without realising it\, crocheters interpret their own patterns\, thus becoming “computers”. Does this then make crochet a form of programming language? By exploring the origins and evolution of crochet and yarn crafts in parallel with the origins of computing (Babbage’s Analytical Engine)\, this talk draws the analogies between a crafty – analog – discipline and what developers know of programming. \nAs well as interesting historical facts\, this talk provides a simple way of explaining key programming concepts and highlights the logical thinking necessary to get into coding. \nWe will cover several notions that can be illustrated with crochet\, such as: patterns and instructions\, language versioning\, compilers\, debugging\, variables\, multithreading\, loops and recursion… \nThis talk is designed for a varied audience (new to programming or experienced)\, as it offers a new angle on the discipline and is language agnostic. \nLily is an experienced software engineer and crafter\, always trying to find new ways to make coding more accessible in this digital world. \nTwitter: @Lily_2point0 \nThe talk will begin at 7pm and last around 60 minutes\, with the opportunity to ask questions afterwards. Refreshments available. \nBooking is required.

SUMMARY:Computing Herstory
DESCRIPTION:Two days of fast-paced\, all-day activities perfect for KS3 students\, our Ada Lovelace Day events for schools encourage girls and boys to engage with technology and STEM. \nAda Lovelace wrote the world’s first complex algorithm in 1843 and was then written out of history until recently. Her story explains why everyone should get involved with computers to help create our future! \nThe day starts with a series of 3 activities in small groups in the morning: a Women in Computing Tour in our main gallery\, a Micro:bit workshop in our classroom and a fun session around computer architecture in our MegaProcessor Zone. \nAfter lunch\, there’ll be an informative talk on cybersecurity by staff from our partners Darktrace – real women who are working in computing fields today who can inspire your students to consider it as a career. \nThere will also be a Computing Herstory exhibition – students can learn about women from the past and the present who did or do amazing things in computing and STEM. Together they can think about how STEM can form part of their own futures. \nThis event is FREE but bookings must be made through our standard event booking system. Please choose which of the days you’d like to attend. You will not be asked for payment details. \nPlease note that students will need to stay for the whole day.

SUMMARY:Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Women in Computing Festival 2018: Her Story \nWhat do the most beautiful actress of the 1930s and 40s and the inventor whose concepts were the basis of cell phone and bluetooth technology have in common? They are both Hedy Lamarr\, the Hollywood icon who was the inspiration for Snow White and Cat Woman and a technological trailblazer who perfected a secure radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes during WWII. \nWeaving interviews and clips with never-before-heard audio tapes of Hedy speaking on the record about her incredible life—from her beginnings as an Austrian Jewish emigre to her scandalous nude scene in the 1933 film Ecstasy to her glittering Hollywood life to her ground-breaking\, but completely uncredited inventions to her latter years when she became a recluse\, impoverished and almost forgotten—BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY brings to light the story of an unusual and accomplished woman\, spurned as too beautiful to be smart\, but a role model to this day. \nInstead of closing at 5pm we will stay open to show the 2017 film of this remarkable woman. Ticket prices include all day entry to the museum. Refreshments will be provided. \nThere will be a short discussion after the film on the controversy that surrounds Hedy Lamarr\, her acting\, her beauty and her inventions. Do we want Hedy Lamarr as a role model today? \n\nFilm starts: 6:30pm\nRating: 12\nRuntime: 90 minutes

SUMMARY:Teachers' Twilight event: Does the gender gap in tech start at school?
DESCRIPTION:There seems to be a well documented and growing gender gap in technology and STEM subjects in schools and universities on a background of a recognised STEM skills shortage in the UK. But what is going here? \nAre there wider issues around gendered classrooms\, gendered school activities\, gendered language and are these all contributing to turning girls away from STEM? \nGet together with other teachers to discuss and unpick the issues and share good practice in encouraging girls into tech subjects. \nWhat works? What doesn’t? Are the issues the same in primary schools and secondaries? Do we do enough to show girls the breadth\, creativity and sheer diversity of roles in modern tech industries? What else can teachers do? How do we engage parents in discussions around gender and tech? Do museums like CCH have a role to play? \nTeachers will be able to interact with our Women in Computing:Her Story exhibition before and after the session and to find out about all our services for schools.

SUMMARY:Give IT a Go: is it as easy as it sounds?
DESCRIPTION:Give IT a Go: is it as easy as it sounds? is our 2018 panel debate on women and computing\, chaired by Suw Charman-Anderson\, founder of Ada Lovelace Day. \n\nCan women get in\, stay in and get back in to careers in tech? \n\nBring your stories on careers in tech (broadly defined\, not just computing!) and join us in this lively debate to help us work out how women can survive and succeed in this field.\n\n\n\nPanellists include Anne Clarke (former Chair of Cambridge AWISE\, Anne is passionate about helping others who have had a career break or want to change career direction); Berenice Mann (scientist turned to the dark side\, who has spent over 15 years as a marketing manager in Cambridge’s high-tech cluster) and Hermione Crease (founder of Purrmetrix\, Hermione has worked for over 20 years in M2M (machine to machine) and IoT solutions). \nTicket price includes entry to the museum\, including the interactive Women in Computing: Her Story exhibition.

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace: The Programmer\, the Maths\, and the Myths
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace is widely celebrated as “the first programmer”\, the “enchantress of numbers” whose unique “poetical science” enabled her to make startling predictions about modern computing in a famous 1843 paper about Charles Babbage’s proposed analytical engine. \nIn this talk\, Professor Ursula Martin (CBE FRSE\, University of Oxford) will separate fact from myth\, talk about what the famous paper actually says\, and look at Lovelace as a member of a dynamic community of nineteenth century British scientists. \nIn particular\, she will high-light recent work on Lovelace’s mathematical “correspondence course” with Augustus De Morgan\, which shows a sophisticated mathematical education and understanding\, enabling her to write the paper and pursue many other mathematical and scientific interests. \n\nThe event is open to all but aimed at a 16+ audience. \n\nTime: 6:30pm \n* \nThis event is part of our October 2017 festival ‘Computing History: Where did all the Women Go?
